All About Debbie Lancaster

I fell in love with art at the tender age of 6, and that same joy in creating sustains me today. I am a native of Norfolk, Virginia and I honor the legacy of my mother who nurtured my gift and gave me space to be creative. I am a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University where I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Illustration. Best of all, I am a proud mother of four young men.

Over the last 30+ years, I have been blessed to use my gifts as a freelance artist and artistic director for numerous community organizations such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Most recently, my work was featured in the Joyce Gordon Art Gallery in Oakland, California. My greatest joy as an artist, however, has been in teaching, mentoring, and inspiring young people. I've had the privilege to teach art in traditional public  private Christian, Montessori, and homeschool settings.

I am a contemporary artist, specializing in African-American art. Much of my art is influenced by my identity as an African American woman and my faith journey. As a young artist, it was important for me to see myself and my culture reflected in my art, so I spent a lot of time drawing myself. Through that, I developed my own sense of pride in who I am and my culture. Today, you will see the kinky hair and full lips characteristic of African Americans in my art. You will see the bright colors and patterns, representing the light, rhythm and soul of my people. You'll also see the contemplative faces, deep in reflection representing the spirituality and faith of my people.

My art is my gift to the world, my tool for expression, and the way that I honor the Creator. I pray that you are inspired as you experience my art.
